Green Light for $10M Gowanda Project

Business First

After six years of planning, Gowanda community leaders will break ground Oct. 15 on Academy Place, a low-income, senior housing project.

A project of the Healthy Community Alliance Inc., the $10 million project, at the site of a former elementary school in the Village of Gowanda on Center Street. In addition to 32 apartments for seniors, the site will include business and office space, a community center and a child day care and adult day care.

The housing breakdown includes 28 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units, with 21 of the units subsidized by Housing and Urban Development. The project is slated for completion in December 2009.

The 77,000-square-foot site will also offer access to social and human service agencies, a distance learning educational component and space for the WNY developmental disabilities services organization. Other features will include a small business space to provide employment opportunities for developmentally disabled consumers.

The Healthy Community Alliance, formed in 1996, is a nonprofit rural health network focusing on improving quality of life through partnerships that support wellness and prevention.

General contractor on the project is Savarino Cos., with Oxford Consulting Inc. as development consultant. BHN&T Architects P.C. is architectural firm of record.
