Academy Place Project Wins Award

Metro WNY

The Healthy Community Alliance's Academy Place project is the winner of Business First's 2011 Brick by Brick Award in the Green Rehab of an Existing Building Category.

The award was made at a ceremony held Sept. 15 at the Statler in Buffalo.

Brick by Brick Awards are given each year to honor area architects, contractors and engineers. Project architects for Academy Place were BHNT Architects PC; Savarino Construction was the contractor. Siracuse Engineers served as the structural engineers and Nussbaumer & Clark were the civil engineers. The $10 million project began in October 2008 and was completed in May 2010.

In nominating the project for the award, BHNT stated in part, "The renovation of this historic school building brings together mixed-use components of affordable senior housing, community recreation, and much-needed office space in the Village of Gowanda. This project brings a vibrant sense of community to a building. The project met the green building initiative standards through the NYS Division of Housing & Community Renewal for high-efficiency buildings. It also earned the Energy Star Building Rating from NYSERDA and was selected to receive a public grant for the installation of 10 KW photovoltaic solar panel system to reduce electric consumption."

"We knew from the beginning that Academy Place was a very unique project, so this recognition is very much appreciated," said HCA Executive Director Sharon Mathe. "It was also gratifying to see our architects, contractor, and engineers honored for their work to make Academy Place a reality."
