The Savarino Cos. has been retained by Explore & More Children’s Museum to handle the interior build-out for its new Canalside location.

Savarino was selected through a bidding process and will be paid a maximum, guaranteed price of $5.25 million.

“This is a major milestone with the construction of our new home,” said Walt Zmuda, Explore & More board chairman.

Work on the $29 million, 43,000-square-foot Canalside museum began in March 2017 and is on pace to open in early 2019.

The first phase of the project — when it opens will be rebranded the Explore & More - The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Children’s Museum — is expected to be completed this summer. The bulk of that work involves exterior and facade construction.

When the interior phase begins, the building will be “turned over” to Explore & More and Savarino Cos., with Foit-Albert Associates handling the interior architecture

Interior work includes mechanical, finishes and the installation of exhibits. The exhibit work will be handled in phases, beginning in December.

Explore & More officials estimate the museum will attract 250,000 visitors annually.
